The espinheira santa, scientifically called Maytenus spp, is a shrub native to South America.
This plant can reach 1 to 2 meters in height, its leaves contain pairs of thorns, it has small flowers and small, dark fruits.
The holy thorn is also known by other names, such as life-saver, field corn coro, God's thorn, maiteno, bull's shadow, congorça and cancerous.
Espinheira santa tea has been popularly consumed since 1930, but nowadays espinheira santa is also used in capsules.
